The History of Discovery

The history of the discovery of the laws of inertia and how they make objects react started back in ancient times.  Aristotle was curious about motion and described his theory as "natural" meaning things moved towards their natural habitat (i.e. heat towards the sun or a rock falling toward the earth).  This idea lasted for 2000 years until Galileo Galilei decided to focus more on how objects moved instead of why.  Because of him, physics became a real science.  The year Galilei died the most successful scientist in relation to motion (aka Issac Newton) was born...

Sir Issac Newton described Galileo's idea in three laws of physics.

  • The 1st  Law - an object tends to continue in its motion at a constant velocity until and unless an outside force acts on it.
  • The 2nd Law - describes the relationship between force and motion or F=ma
  • The 3rd Law - for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.
